Dr Johann Malawana
Dr Johann Malawana is an internationally recognised physician, entrepreneur, and workforce strategist with over 20 years of leadership experience in healthcare, education, and policy. He is currently the Founder and CEO of Medics.Academy, a technology company revolutionising healthcare training, and the Director of The Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA), a social enterprise dedicated to nurturing the next generation of clinical leaders.
Driven by a mission to solve systemic workforce challenges, Johann established The HLA to empower students and early-career professionals to become effective leaders within their health systems. Through Medics.Academy, he has spearheaded the development of scalable, digital-first education programmes that have trained thousands of clinicians globally. In recognition of his expertise in education innovation, he was appointed as a Senior Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire in 2021.
Strategic Leadership & Policy Johann has held pivotal roles at the intersection of medical politics and national strategy. He served as Chair of the Junior Doctors Committee at the British Medical Association (BMA) (2015–2016), leading high-stakes negotiations during a critical period for the NHS workforce. Previously, he managed the BMA’s Education and Training portfolio (2007–2010), where he led negotiations following the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) crisis to stabilise medical training pathways.
Global Impact & Board Experience His commitment to global health is evidenced by his tenure as the Lead for Education and Training at Healthcare UK (Department for International Trade), where he promoted British healthcare expertise to international markets (2018–2020).
