About the Programme

The HLA Scholarship Programme has now been recognised and accredited by the University of Lancashire, where Scholars intending to continue their journey into a postgraduate certificate through the Innovative Leadership, Education and Technology (InLET) programme will be awarded 20 master’s credits for the HLA Scholars programme upon completion. They can then complete their PgCert by doing 2 more modules (which are already accredited by the university) out of the 5 modules available (CPHL/ACE/ TEL/ LAAF/ LAAC).

The pathway is open to both current Scholars (2025/26) as well as 2026/27 Scholars and beyond.

About the Instructors

Dr Sarah Malawana

Lead Tutor, Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, Clinical Programme Manager at Medics.Academy

Dr Sarah Malawana (MBBS, nMRCGP, BSc Hons Physiol, MSc Hons Clin Derm, DRCOG, DFSRH) was a GP Partner in Hertfordshire for 9 years and a Full Trainer for GP Registrars. Dr Malawana currently still works in General Practice, teaches on the Applied Clinical Education module of the PGCERT in her role as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and has excelled as the Clinical Programme Manager for both UK and International Projects.

Professor Derek Gallen

Chief Education Officer - Medics.Academy

Professor Derek Gallen is the current president of the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME), past postgraduate dean for wales and past UK national director for the foundation programme. Ex-President of the Academy of Medical Educators. He is currently our Chief Education Officer.

Dr. Soham Bandyopadhyay

Academic Clinical Fellow In Neurosurgery, TEL Module Lead

Soham Bandyopadhyay is an academic doctor, with interests in neurosurgery, global health, and medical education. He completed his MA in Medical Sciences and BM BCh at St Hilda’s College at the University of Oxford, obtaining a distinction in his first BM examinations. Since graduation, he has completed 1) a postgraduate certificate in clinical practice, management and education, 2) an advanced diploma in healthcare business and finance, and 3) a masters in public health. As part of his academic responsibilities, he is a non-stipendiary lecturer in medicine for St Hilda's College, a teaching associate for the Oxford University Global Surgery Group, a module lead for the Clinical Practice, Management & Education degree at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), and a teaching fellow for the University of Southampton. He is also an educational and research mentor for students internationally. He previously completed an academic foundation programme under the supervision of Professor Kokila Lakhoo. He continues to work with Professor Lakhoo as part of the Global Health Research Group on Children's Non-Communicable Diseases. He is passionate about bringing the voices of patients and the general public to the table when discussing research or advocacy efforts.

Dr. Owens Iguodala

Dr. Owens is a dually qualified dentist and pharmacist, undergoing dental core training in Paediatric Dentistry, having completed rotations in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Public Dental Service. As of September 2024, he will be completing a year as Clinical Fellow for the Chief Dental Officer (England) Fellowship with NHS Transformation Directorate.
