About the Programme

The Coaching and Supervision programme at Medics.Academy is designed as a one-year development initiative to enhance educational leadership, and reflective practice among senior educators affiliated with the HLA.

The programme objectives are as follows:


1. Enhance Educational Leadership Competence

  • Develop advanced skills in leading and managing educational programmes within the HLA framework.
  • Strengthen the ability to inspire, influence, and support scholars and fellow educators.


2. Deepen Reflective Practice

  • Foster the habit of structured reflection to improve decision-making, problem-solving, and self-awareness.
  • Integrate reflective insights into everyday leadership and educational delivery.


3. Strengthen Coaching and Mentoring Skills

  • Equip cohort directors with the ability to use coaching approaches in supporting scholars and colleagues.
  • Promote a developmental culture that encourages growth, autonomy, and accountability.


4. Improve Ethical and Values-Based Leadership

  • Enhance capacity to navigate complex ethical situations with integrity and transparency.
  • Align leadership actions with HLA’s values, mission, and professional standards.


5. Build Emotional Resilience and Wellbeing Strategies

  • Develop strategies for sustaining personal wellbeing in high-responsibility educational roles.
  • Build resilience in responding to challenges, setbacks, and change.


6. Foster Peer Learning and Collaboration

  • Strengthen networks between cohort directors to enable sharing of ideas, resources, and good practice.
  • Promote collaborative approaches to problem-solving and innovation in scholar programmes.


7. Embed Continuous Professional Development

  • Create a sustainable personal development plan for continued leadership growth beyond the programme.
  • Maintain engagement with reflective practice and peer supervision after completion.

Instructor

Professor Emeritus Derek Gallen

Derek has had a long career in medical education having qualified as a GP. He has been the Postgraduate Dean for Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland before becoming the Postgraduate Dean for Wales. He was a founding member of the Academy of Medical Educators and went on to become its president. He has also been the president of the Association for the Study of Medical Educators. He is the author of 7 books on medical education and leadership and published numerous peer reviewed articles again on medical education. Currently he is the education lead for medics academy and his research interests are in interprofessional education for healthcare workers.
