Medics.Academy have developed a series of educational programmes related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications to healthcare accredited by the University of Cumbria (UoC). The programme has been designed to give clinicians core skills related to artificial intelligence in healthcare. The programme is completely virtual and requires no face-to-face sessions, and learning is facilitated through Zoom, our website, and our app.

The Curriculum

This programme covers a number of topics related to application of healthcare. Learners will be exposed to a number of seminal papers, webinars, and online reading. Additionally, learners will be able to work to a facilitated project related to Artificial Intelligence. Whilst this programme covers many of the applications of AI in healthcare, it should be noted that this is a 'no code programme.

Intended learning outcomes may be found below:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts and principles of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and innovative technologies in the context of digital health, including machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing. 
  • Evaluate the potential impact of AI and innovative techniques to healthcare delivery, patient outcomes, and the overall healthcare system, considering both benefits and challenges.
  • Analyse and apply AI algorithms and techniques to healthcare data for tasks such as diagnosis, treatments planning, risk prediction, and personalised medicine, with a focus on improving patient care. 
  • Critically assess the ethical and legal implications of using AI and innovative technologies in healthcare, including issues realted to privacy, data security, bias, and accountability. 
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including data scientists, engineers, and clinicians, to develop and implement AI-driven solutions in healthcare settings. 
  • Apply rigorous data governance and quality assurance principles to ensure the integrity, reliability, and validity of healthcare data used for AI applications. 
  • Evaluate the usability and user experience of AI-based healthcare applications, considering factors such as accessibility, human-computer interactions, and user acceptance.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills to explain AI concepts, methodologies, and finding to non-technical stakeholders, including patients, healthcare professionals, and policymakers.
  • Stay informed about the latest advancements and emerging trends in AI and innovative technologies in digital health, and critically assess their potential applications and limitations in real-world healthcare contexts.
  • Apply a reflective and adaptive approach to continuously evaluate and improve the implementation and utilisation of AI and innovative technologies in healthcare, while considering patient safety, clinical efficacy, and ethical considerations.

Time Commitment 

This programme is designed to be completed over 12 months. the programme will require:

  • 70 hours on reading and online learning content
  • 100 hours on a facilitated artificial intelligence project
  • 30 hours on workshops, plenaries, and preparing for your assessment. 

Assessment 

Assessment will be through a presentation and structured viva voce and a reflective learning logbook. Learners will also be invited to pitch their ideas at our dedicated pitching session.

Instructors

Dr Souradip Mookerjee

Doctor and AI researcher

Dr Souradip Mookerjee has been a lifelong technologist, having learnt to code aged 12. He trained at the University of Cambridge, graduating with both a medical degree and a PhD in research. He is currently a practising doctor in London and active AI researcher in the field of deep learning applied to healthcare. He has presented his work on deep learning applied to medicine at conferences nationally and internationally including at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Royal Society of Medicine and NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference, and published work in high impact journals such as Nature Methods. Dr Mookerjee has many years of experience training, optimising and deploying machine learning models at scale, as well as a large open-source contributor portfolio, including contributions to foundational libraries such as Google’s Tensorflow.

Dr Solomon Kamal-Uddin

Dual Accreditation CCT in Paediatrics with Subspecialty training in Emergency Medicine (PEM)

With extensive cross-sector experience in healthcare, education, clinical trials, industry, and patient organizations, I am dedicated to finding innovative solutions to healthcare challenges and supporting patient communities. Holding dual accreditation in paediatrics and emergency medicine, I have led multidisciplinary teams across various NHS trusts and contributed to national clinical trials and Delphi Studies. In the life science industry, I've managed over 200 paediatric and rare disease projects at IQVIA and currently lead global medical strategy at BC Platforms. Additionally, I've served as a regional medical advisor in a patient-focused biotech company. Actively engaged in the Royal College of Paediatrics' Climate Change Working Group and Medics.Academy as a senior clinical fellow, I contribute to education and research. I also collaborate with patient-focused organisations like the Cambridge Rare Disease Network and Usher Syndrome Ireland, aiming to positively influence healthcare messaging and support advancements in addressing the climate crisis.

Dr Iain Campbell

Lead Director for HLA Scotland and Head of AI Policy, Ethics, and Transformation at HLA

Dr. Iain Campbell is a seasoned professional with a rich background encompassing healthcare, law, and leadership. Having successfully navigated both medical and law schools, Dr. Campbell brings a unique perspective to his roles. With previous positions including Secretary General, Deputy Head of Legal, and Chairman of the board in various organisations, and having had oversight of budgets in the millions, he has honed his skills in strategic leadership, policy development and public affairs, collaborating closely with Members of Parliament and providing oral and written evidence to select committees. Currently, Dr. Campbell serves as Lead Director for HLA Scotland and Head of AI Policy, Ethics, and Transformation for the HLA, where he plays a significant role in shaping organisational policies, and nurturing the healthcare leaders of tomorrow. Concurrently, he holds the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh's renowned medical school. In this capacity, Dr. Campbell has been involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, imparting knowledge and expertise to future healthcare professionals. In addition to his academic and leadership roles, Dr. Campbell immerses himself in the field of artificial intelligence, with an especial interest in LLMs (Large Language Models), GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks), and Convolutional Neural Networks - along with a particular policy interest in alignment, and AI Policy and Ethics. His keen interest in these technologies underscores his commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements in healthcare - and the huge benefits to patients they have the potential to usher in. Through his multifaceted roles and dedication to education, Dr. Campbell continues to make significant contributions to the fields of healthcare and artificial intelligence, shaping the next generation of healthcare leaders and advocating the benefits of AI in transforming healthcare practices.

Elliott Engers

CEO and Cofounder of Infinity Health

Elliott co-founded Infinity Health in 2014 to transform the way care is coordinated by making task management easier, safer and more efficient for frontline staff. As CEO, Elliott was responsible for fundraising, R&D and commercial activity at Infinity Health and has experience building and working in multi-disciplinary teams to develop and integrate technology in highly regulated environments. Elliott has been made a Fellow of the NHS Innovation Accelerator and is passionate about developing technologies that drive meaningful and measurable benefits for patients and staff working across health and care.

Susan Howard

Technical, Project and Risk Tools Specialist at Underscore

Susan originally comes from a technical background, having started her career as a programmer, database designer and technical support analyst. While working in technical support roles, she utilised a broad range of different software packages during evaluation and selection processes and, from this, developed an interest in training. Using her technical background and passion for sharing knowledge, she wanted to be able to support people in using new tools rather than just troubleshooting when things went wrong. Susan has a track record of more than 25 years designing and delivering training solutions for clients which include some of the biggest names in Finance, Transportation, Engineering,Construction, Health Care and Government. Susan has a real passion and enthusiasm for learning. She has a wealth of experience in training a wide range of technical and project management tools. This includes office tools such as Power BI, Excel and VBA, Project and Risk Management tools such as Primavera, Project, PRA, and Nodes and Links through to huge ERP and HR System rollouts for organisations. She has provided a range of learning interventions including classroom-based sessions, workshops, virtual training, floor walking and technical support.

Dr Marcos Santiago

MD, Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University

Marcos is a medical doctor from Chile who is doing a Ph.D. in Learning Sciences and Technology Design at the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. In his work, he utilises immersive technologies and AI to enhance medical education. He is part of the Stanford Chariot Program at Stanford Medicine Children's Health and the IDEAL lab at the School of Education, where he explores the use of these technologies to improve clinical reasoning in health professionals.

Dr. Yusuf Karmali

Fellowship Programme Clinical Lead

Yusuf is a Medics.Academy Programme Manager, Clinical Lead for the Medics.Academy Fellows Programme and a Foundation Year doctor, graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine. Throughout medical school, Yusuf was awarded numerous prizes for outstanding academic achievement and he delivered high-quality peer-teaching through student-led societies, in which he held various positions of leadership. His passion for education led to him joining Medics.Academy in July 2018, where he started as a fellow and lead author on the clinical genetics course. He went on to become a member of the Medics.Academy team as a Clinical Programme Manager and then has been the Clinical Lead on the highly successful Medics.Academy Fellowship Programme. He is also part of the F|Docs Faculty where he leads teaching sessions for foundation year doctors, and also enjoys teaching medical students as part of the S|Docs Programme. His other interests include medical technology and health policy.

The Healthcare Leadership Academy

The Healthcare Leadership Academy formed in response to the demand from young clinicians and medical students to learn about leadership. Founded by Dr Johann Malawana and a team of like-minded professionals the Healthcare Leadership Academy launched on the 20th of December 2016.
