HLA Intermediate Leadership Programme

Leading to Membership of Institute of Leadership and Management and MInstLM

This is a fully online programme designed for Clinicians interested in Leadership to gain qualifications that lead to an ILM Level 5 qualification with the option of gaining Membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management (MInstLM).

The programme is designed to be completed over 1 year. 

The programme covers the 6 domains of The Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) framework:

  • The Leader as a Communicator
  • The Leader as a Manager
  • The Leader as a Negotiator
  • The Leader as an Innovator and Entrepreneur
  • The Leader as a Follower
  • The Leader as a Philosopher


The programme is delivered through a combination of webinars, assignments and online content. The candidate can follow the programme and complete and submit the assignments through the year. There will be a range of speakers, tutors and workshop hosts that will deliver a series of content.

The webinar content will be able to be watched live, with a selection of content recorded and accessible in the candidates own time. There is a community aspect to the programme with all candidates being invited to take part in an online community, as well as access to a series of HLA events as part of the programme. Candidates will be availble to join the programme in September and March each year.

Eligibility to join

This programme is designed for healthcare professionals and students studying to become a registered healthcare professional. Eligibility to is required to be proven for the ongoing subscription and to achieve MInstLM status subsequently.

Is this aimed at a specific level in the healthcare system ie students, consultants or somewhere in between?

The HLA programmes are not really clinical stage-specific. We have run programmes for many years that have students through to NHS consultants on the same programme and we get consistently excellent feedback. Our focus is on the core skills in leadership and how to apply them to your situation currently. We take our participants, and encourage them to apply the learning to the activities in their lives and work, at whatever stage they are at.

What are the time requirements and structure of the programme?

The participant is expected to undertake approximately 4 hours per week = 200 Hours of work, to complete the programme. This will be divided approximately into the following allocations. 

50 hours of Webinars and Online Learning Modules

50 hours project work

50 hours of assignments 

At least 50 hours of structured self development and background reading

What is required from the 50 hours of Assignments?

For the assignments, you will be expected to deliver the following:

  • 6 Reflective Thought Leadership Pieces via LinkedIn
  • 6 Educational Leadership tasks via Twitter 
  • 3 structured discussions on Leadership and Healthcare for Healthcare students

How will the programme be assessed? 

Assessment will be through delivery of a practical project, a series of video presentation submissions and a series of multimedia assignments. The programme is designed as a multimedia programme aimed at clinicians that would like to gain practical clinical leadership skills and experience for to support them through their future careers.

The Community

Participants will join a vibrant community in The HLA and develop a network tat will support them throughout their careers. 

Those that complete the programme successfully, will be eligible for Membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management and be able to use the MInstLM postnominals for as long as they continue to be a subscriber. During their time as a subscriber, they will also have access to the Associate Membership of The HLA subscription including all the benefits conferred. 

Events

Whilst undertaking the programme, participants will receive a ticket to the annual HLA Conference, you will also be invited to a selection of events available to HLA subscribers.

Is there any financial support for students?

Yes. There is a bursary scheme that students can apply for. We give out £10,000 of bursaries to students per year. Each bursary is £500 or £750 depending on a competitive application.

Are there financial support schemes for other health professionals?

If you are a health professional within 3 years of qualifying, there are bursaries of up to £400 available for competitive entry.

If you come from a lower or middle income country, there are a small number of international bursaries of up to 90% off the programme fee. These are granted on a competitive basis and will include a discount on the first 5 years of the ILM Subscription fee to support you in the development of your career.

What are the costs of the Programme?

The HLA ILM5 Clinical Leadership Certificate is £1450 for the year, with the assumption that you complete the programme within the year. After that you will be required to pay £240 a year to use the MInstLM post-nominals and you will become an HLA Associate member. You will have access to a package of ongoing CPD each year and you will have access to The HLA Community.

Background

The Healthcare Leadership Academy formed in response to demand from young clinicians and medical students to learn about leadership.

Founded by Dr Johann Malawana (Managing Director), and a team of like-minded professionals (Our Faculty and Assistant Course Directors) the Healthcare Leadership Academy launched on 20th December 2016.

HLA houses an exciting faculty from across the health sector and beyond. Their shared aim is to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and develop their understanding of leadership. Too often in healthcare, leadership is confused with management. Through a combination of mentoring, Socratic discussion, and philosophical exploration, HLA aims to inspire our scholars to change the world of healthcare, one small step at a time.

At a time when the world seems an ever more worrying place, it is important that the next generation of healthcare professionals truly understand how to motivate the people they work with in order to best look after the populations they serve.

Founder and Director of The Healthcare Leadership Academy
Johann has been in leadership roles for more than 18 years.

Johann is currently the Founder and CEO of Medics.Academy, the Founder and Managing Director of The HLA and the Lead for Education and Training at Healthcare UK at the Department for International Trade.

Johann is best known as the former chair of the Junior Doctors Committee of the British Medical Association. However, he has held a variety of roles over 18 years.

Johann was a former President of Barts and The London Students’ Association, a former University of London Medical Students’ Officer at ULU and the founding Editor of The Medical Student. Following the crisis caused by Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) via Medical Training Application System (MTAS) in March 2007, Johann took over the Education and Training portfolio at the BMA in September 2007. He was responsible for a lot of detailed negotiations around the education and training environment in medicine for the next three years till 2010. He was credited with a lot of initiatives that improved the working and education lives of junior doctors. He was responsible for designing the first Interdeanery Transfer System and negotiated for it to be implemented in every Deanery in the UK.

As a result of this, Johann developed a strong representative and leadership reputation and was appointed to the boards of both the General Medical Council and the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board. He undertook a lot of work on both boards to ensure the voices of medical students and junior doctors were heard. Johann served as an advisor on several reviews of the medical education environment with a strong belief in the need for strong medical leadership and the power of young doctors and medical students to be a force for good in the NHS. Many of the engagement strategies developed for these reviews were a direct result of the work Johann undertook.

Through The Healthcare Leadership Academy, Johann hopes to support healthcare professionals to feel more comfortable in leadership roles, to support them through the diverse and vibrant community that we have built up in their whole careers and to ensure that individuals do not feel isolated in leadership roles.
