About the Conference

The Healthcare Leadership Academy and Medics.Academy are excited to announce the upcoming HLA Medics.Academy Winter Conference 2021, “Today’s Health workforce: Challenges and Solutions”. A two-day international event filled with talks and workshops delivered by current and future healthcare leaders around the globe. This years conference is being organised in collaboration with HLA:IDEAS and specifically The Aspiring Medical Students Support (TAMS) and In2MedSchool. These two organisations support young people into careers in medicine in the UK.

Whilst exploring the challenges that face our health workforce today, we will also showcase various projects that have provided solutions to these problems both locally and beyond. Get ready to be inspired, challenged and empowered to influence and impact Today’s Health Workforce.

Through the entire conference, the following objectives will be met:

  1. Understand the challenges that face today’s health workforce in terms of establishing a healthcare workforce that is truly representative of the population it aims to serve.
  2. Explore the impact and magnitude of global health workforce shortages
  3. Promote and share best practice of projects designed to enhance the scale and representativeness  of today’s health workforce

The conference will be on Saturday 13th November  and Sunday 14th November, and will run from 9:30am to 4:30pm BST on both days.

Day 1- Representativeness of Today’s Health Workforce: Challenges and Solutions

A variety of professions that make up our health workforce have been described as socially exclusive. Day 1 will explore the merits, challenges and solutions to establishing a health workforce that is truly representative of the population it aims to serve.

By the end of the day, conference delegates will have had the opportunity to network and engage with healthcare and organisation leaders concerning best practice to effectively and sustainably improve the representativeness of a health workforce, both locally and beyond.

Day 2- Scale of Today’s Health Workforce: Challenges and Solutions

According to the World Health Organisation, there is a projected shortfall of 18 million health workers by 2030. Health workforce shortages is a major challenge that faces every health system, regardless of national income. Day 2 of this conference will thus be focused on unpacking this under-discussed issue.

By the end of the day, conference delegates will have had the opportunity to engage with an issue that affects each and every health worker. Through a host of talks and workshops we will highlight the challenges and explore the solutions to effectively and sustainably enhance the scale of a health workforce, both locally and beyond.

About the Organisations

The Healthcare Leadership Academy

Aims:

  • Nurturing Leadership: working with healthcare students and young professionals to develop our leaders of the future
  • Fostering Frontline Innovation: Engaging, developing and guiding clinicians to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Empowering and Valuing the Next Generation of Clinical Leaders: Supporting our clinicians to use their talent effectively.
  • Accessibility: The HLA value accessibility and equity and believe all healthcare professionals should have the means to learn about and engage in leadership activities; at any level and at any time.
  • Inclusivity: The HLA believes inclusivity is key to leadership. Leadership should not be the arena of a chosen few but of all those with innovative visions, ideas and solutions.

The Healthcare Leadership Academy formed in response to demand from young clinicians and medical students to learn about leadership.

Founded by Dr Johann Malawana (Course Director), former leader of the Junior Doctor Dispute, and a team of like-minded professionals (Our Faculty and Assistant Course Directors) the Healthcare Leadership Academy launched on 20th December 2016.

HLA houses an exciting faculty from across the health sector and beyond. Their shared aim is to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and develop their understanding of leadership. Too often in healthcare, leadership is confused with management. Through a combination of mentoring, Socratic discussion, and philosophical exploration, HLA aims to inspire our scholars to change the world of healthcare, one small step at a time.

At a time when the world seems an ever more worrying place, it is important that the next generation of healthcare professionals truly understand how to motivate the people they work with in order to best look after the populations they serve.
