This event is tailored for individuals who applied to the HLA Scholarship Programme but were not successful in securing a place. It is designed to support and guide you in exploring alternative leadership opportunities through the Healthcare Leadership Academy and Medics.Academy.
Whether you’re planning to reapply or seeking new development pathways, this session will help you continue your leadership journey and remain actively engaged with the HLA community.
What to Expect on the Day
Led by Dr Johann Malawana, Founder and Director of Medics.Academy and the HLA, this interactive session will:
Showcase alternative leadership opportunities, including the Postgraduate Programme in Innovative Leadership, Education and Technology (InLET), Medics.Academy Fellowship Programme, Intermediate Level One Programme (IL1 Program), and Artificial Intelligence and Innovative Technologies in Digital Health Programme
Explore potential routes into the HLA Scholarship and alternative leadership pathways
Provide time for Q&A and individual reflection on your next steps

Dr Johann Malawana
Johann, with over 15 years of leadership experience, founded Medics Academy and The Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) to address systemic issues in healthcare and support early-career development.
He is renowned for his role as the former chair of the Junior Doctors Committee of the British Medical Association and has held significant positions such as President of Barts and The London Students’ Association and University of London Medical Students’ Officer.
Johann played a pivotal role in negotiating improvements for junior doctors after the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) crisis, including the Inter Deanery Transfer System. His leadership and advocacy led to appointments on the boards of the General Medical Council and the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board, representing medical students and junior doctors.
